Assisting Somalis
Continuously present in South Central Somalia since 1991, MSF remains the main provider of free medical services and has long-running projects in Banadir, Bay, Galgaduud, Hiraan, Lower Juba, Middle Shabelle, Lower Shabelle and Mudug regions.

In 2010 MSF started working in the Maroodi Jeex Region of Somaliland. MSF teams are also setting up another project in Sanaag Region, Somaliland. In Ethiopia’s Somali region, MSF assists refugees from Somalia as well as ethnic Somalis living in Ethiopia. MSF also works in Djibouti, Egypt, Kenya, Malta, and until recently, Yemen providing medical care to Somali refugees and asylum seekers.

Banadir Region, South Central Somalia
In northern Mogadishu MSF has run one of the few public health facilities in the city’s Yaqshid area since 1994.In Daynile MSF is running the 59-bed Daynile Hospital. In Mogadishu MSF is running clinics in the northern area of the town.

Bakool Region, South Central Somalia
At the moment MSF is not running projects in the Bakool region.Before the closure of Bakool project MSF was providing basic healthcare in Bakool region, with an emphasis on quality treatment for neglected diseases like tuberculosis and kala azar.

Bay Region, South Central Somalia
In Dinsor MSF runs a 65-bed facility which offers both inpatient and outpatient care. The inpatient department (IPD), which serves the population of the entire district’s approximately 110,000 people, provides paediatric and adult medical care, treatment for tuberculosis and kala azar; as well as therapeutic feeding for severely malnourished children.

Galguduud Region, South Central Somalia
MSF works in Guri El’s Istarlin hospital, a health post in Dhusa Mareb and one in Hinder. MSF provides a wide range of care, including paediatric, maternity and surgical.

Hiraan Region, South Central Somalia
MSF runs the 99 bed regional hospital in Belet Weyne. MSF provides emergency surgery, trauma care, paediatric and adult medical care and treatment of severe malnutrition and is prepared to respond to medical emergencies in the region. Lower Juba Region, South Central Somalia
In Marere MSF runs an outpatient department, paediatric inpatient department, and maternity unit where medical staff provide delivery services, including emergency obstetric care, therapeutic and supplementary feeding, surgery, outpatient services and tuberculosis treatment.In Jamame MSF runs an outpatient department and inpatient department. Lower Shabelle Region, South Central Somalia
In Lower Shabelle MSF is running clinics in Hawa Abdi and Afgooye. Services include, among others, paediatric department, cholera and diarrhoea treatment centre and nutrition programme.

Maroodi Jeex Region, Somaliland
In Hargeisa, MSF is providing free basic healthcare and nutritional care to particularly vulnerable people, focusing on children under five. MSF also provides antenatal and postnatal care for pregnant women, and ensures that patients in need of lifesaving emergency treatment are referred to the local hospital. In 2010, MSF provided these services at three clinic sites in the city of Hargeisa to people living in the neighbourhoods of Lug Iyo Lacaag, Shadaha and State House

Middle Shabelle Region, South Central Somalia
MSF provides basic health care through a network of four health centres in the rural districts of Jowhar, Mahaday and Balcad.

Mudug Region, South Central Somalia
In Mudug region MSF works in both South and North Galcayo. In South Galcayo hospital MSF provides outpatient curative and preventive services, including maternal care and vaccination, and inpatient care. Sanaag Region, Somaliland
In July 2010, MSF started providing emergency surgical, maternal and neonatal healthcare at the hospital in Ceerigaabo, in Sanaag region. In this isolated rural area, life is difficult for many people due to recurrent droughts, poverty and insecurity; and access to free healthcare is limited.

Djibouti, Djibouti City
MSF has worked in Djibouti since 2008. Medical teams take care of children with severe malnutrition in Balbala, a suburb of Djibouti City, where some 200,000 people live, including a large number of people from neighbouring countries such as Somalia and Ethiopia. Egypt, Cairo
MSF recently opened a maternal and child health clinic in Ezbet El Haggana, an urban slum located in the East of Greater Cairo. Ethiopia, Somali Region
In the Somali region of Ethiopia MSF is working in Dolo Ado , which is home to around 3,500 people, assisting Somali refugees.MSF teams provide free basic health care, nutritional screening and measles vaccination for children under 15 years old.

Kenya, Dadaab refugee camp
MSF responsible for all healthcare in one of the camps, Dagahaley. MSF runs a one hundred bed hospital and four health posts around the camp provide which offers all levels of secondary care, including surgery, vaccinations, antenatal care, preventative and curative care and mental health care. Malta, Hal Far – Valletta
MSF currently works in the open centres in Malta. MSF provides medical and psychological support to around 3,000 people live in the centre.
